here i go again…

Sorry to the sweet souls who started following me here. I realised that I cant keep up with multiple blogs and sites, so am in the process of bringing everything together in one spot, using the self hosted version of wordpress.

Thanks to the lovely folks who read my newbie efforts here. Hope you’ll follow me in my new home…if not, au revoir and may your path be a smooth one.

Thanks

Gah! Webby woes…

Soooooo, I decided that I’d quit being so fragmented online and move everything to one wordpress.org account.

Well, that was the plan…

…but as is the way with tech it’s all gone horribly wrong. Alas and alack my domain name doesn’t point to a spiffy site, or even an older slightly less spiffy one. Apologies to anyone who’s met the dreaded 404 recently. I’ve no idea how long it will take fibro brain and I to fix this one. Delete and start again is how it looks now :(

Until I’ve figured out all the fibro brain numbing mistakes etc SandraLock.com no longer works. Sorry.

The old site can be reached here. I’ll try to tweak some other links to lead there – but until then, humble apologies for any dead links…

Gah! and indeed, Meh!

Week 18/52 – photo challenge

Mobile photography

18/52

Photographed with iOS camera in my bedroom, then apped with Scratchcam.

The ACEO is by Gioia Albano – one of her daily paintings in the 365 ACEO challenge that she’s set herself, (much more ambitious than me ;) See more in her Etsy shop and her blog. (and here’s the ACEO inspired by me…now also in my home, waiting to be framed.)

This photo finally morphed into this painting;

First photo…its falling in great big fluffy flakes. Its also been hailing so the fallen snow has the most interesting texture i think I’ve ever seen…hope its the same texture in the morning…too dark to capture from inside the house.

‘She Dances’ – being thankful

As well as being grateful for managing to create at least one image a week for 17 weeks,

no small achievement considering how bad fibro’s been, and I’ve also had a stomach virus. Oh woe is me ;)

there have also been some other unexpected rays of light for which I am very thankful.

Snow came to Liverpool last week and the day after the first snow fall there was a knock at the front door. Our next door neighbour was checking in to see if we needed any shopping AND another neighbour had cleared our path and steps and gritted it all. Awesome eh?

The fact that the neighbour who cleared the snow is in his 70′s is a twist of fate of which my 40 something self is well aware…but although the pain etc sometimes seems unsurmountable, there are still things to be grateful for, and I wanted to make sure I took a moment to remind myself of that.

I do hope that each person who reads this can think of at least one thing to be grateful for in their day.

Lastly – because a kind blog reader suggested that I share the LetterMpress post there, I took a long overdue visit to the MobiTog forum and whilst there discovered a new app. (Yes, I’m an app addict.) So I’ve been putting some of my artwork through it and rather loving the effects.

The app is called ‘etchings’ and has a range of effects and customisation options.

Creative Apps – Graphics – LetterMpress

Did you ever play with a rubber printing kit as a child? Was there one called John Brown’s Printing Kit? Tiny pieces of rubber letters, getting inky fingers…and it has to be said a fair amount of frustration. Well, this app is a bit like that only without the frustration. Plus its much less messy.

Its called LetterMpress and replicates the feel and look of a traditional printing press. The type images are the genuine article – researched and photographed. There are even realistic sound effects, though you can turn them off.

You can save the design to your camera roll or email it. If you print on to transparent ‘paper’ it will save the image as a png file which means you can import the image into other apps to add your own custom background or a drop shadow effect. I often use the designs in ‘Inkpad’. Or you can import them into something as simple as Photoshop mobile and add various borders or colour effects.

You can save a design and upload it to a print on demand site and have it printed on a whole range of items, which make great gifts. Yes, the image resolution is that good.

If you do buy and use this app, please let me know. I’d love to see what you create…in fact, I wonder if there’s a Flickr group? Any problems – ask in the comments, it may help somebody else too.

*If you’re wondering what I used to frame the images above, it’s an app called ‘Strip Designer.’ Almost everything I do, from writing this blog post to creating art is done on my ipad or iphone.

Winter in suburbia

Hipstamatic photo - winter in suburbia

Hipstamatic – Dali lens and film

Bedroom was much colder when I woke this morning, and I could hear the wind getting up. I was wrong about snow, I thought, because its usually bright and milder when (if ever) we get it here in Liverpool. So I pushed the curtain aside and peeked shivering out into the blizzard. Yeah – not a blizzard by other folks standards ;) but it is for us.

So, i’ll be trapped in the house by the weather rather than just Fibro, and alas my photos won’t be as interesting as the dreamy white wonders you can see online during snowy weather. That view is all I have to work with and there are even fewer trees than last year

Hope it doesn’t get too thick…

Sensory overload

It may be just a fibro thing…or it could be a run of too much stress/drama/added illness. It could even just be my peri-menopausal hormones. Goodness knows.

Fibro folks are pretty overly sensitised to…well, everything, so its not like this is a strange occurrence. But I feel…unsettled. Ungrounded, like things are shifting. Could be the time of year of course. I’ve always hated january – march. Partly because, I suspect, of that whole lack of sunlight thing. But also most of the deaths in the family have always happened in these dark months – starting with my Dad when I was 12.
But I’m trying to turn this into a positive, (not the deaths, heh, not much point in attempting the impossible.) but rather the time of the year.
I find myself becoming more and more fascinated by pagan rituals and other earth centred belief systems. We’re heading towards Imbolc and I like the idea of January being a time of reflection and release.
I’m slowly working my way through this workbook and doing the eCourse that I’ve previously mentioned…and it feels the right month to be doing that.
I suspect it will snow overnight. (Not sure why, haven’t seen any weather forecasts…i just keep seeing snow. Odd.) But it will fit in with the feeling of hibernation and seclusion. The need for calm and quiet.
So…yeah…art and mental health. It’s a topic I hope I can manage to write about with some clarity in the coming years, because it keeps me sane.
Yes really – my life has narrowed to a fraction of what it was, but in many ways its also much richer. I owe that richness mostly to my two iGadgets. I can loose myself in a creative world either of my own or that of a myriad of talented other souls, all with a tap of my finger on a smooth screen.
Sensory overload

Sensory overload

Insomnia is another constant companion to fibromyalgia – and the other night whilst feeling (as usual) exhausted but unable to sleep, my most overwhelming feeling was of sensory overload. So I immersed myself in the quiet construction of the above image. It may not look like much – but it helped me enormously. No expectations or intent…just following instinct. Doing what felt right. The flow getting smoother as I became more focused. Its a kind of waking meditation if that makes any sense?
I suspect that’s what I ought to be doing right now…hope wherever you are, you’re safe and warm with a smooth path before you. Able to do what’s best for you.
Hope the Sandman brings me sleep tonight…

Word of the year – or rather phrase/mantra

Inspired by the blog post, Word of the year by Kasey Mathews.

The background was ‘painted’ digitally on my iPad using the Art Rage app. Then I altered it with the Glaze app.
The white tree was drawn with the Adobe Ideas app. Then the two images were combined using the Inkpad app.
The lighting effects were created with the Lens light app. Snow and water added with Colour Lake. Last of all I used the Logo Art app (because I only had my iPhone available at the time I decided to add the mantra to this image.)

If this word/phrase resonates with you, feel free to save this image and use it for your own personal use. It will look fine on a screen and should be fine for a small home print. Any problems let me know.

Bright blessings

Getting the creative habit

I’ve tried a number of things over the years in an attempt to develop a creative habit of some kind, usually work got in the way. Becoming ill has posed even more of a challenge.

One year I successfully completed “30 things in 30 days” but only by scheduling posts…which sort of defeats the purpose of the challenge. Next I signed up for a weekly photography challenge on Google Plus. There was a theme/title for each week, but I didn’t manage that for more than a month or two because I’m housebound much of the time and my options were too limited.
So…what next? A friend suggested that taking my health into account, trying to do anything on a regular basis (besides taking my medication) was setting myself up for failure. But I’m a stubborn soul and I decided to try one more time.

A weekly photography blog.
I use my mobile phone and iPad to create with most of the time. (Click here to find out why.) Sometimes I use a mobile photograph (photo taken with a mobile phone) as the stimulus, other times it’s a sketch of some kind. So for my weekly challenge I decided to limit myself to photography as the starting point. It doesn’t need to be a photo taken that week and if it’s been an especially bad week then I can post a previously created image. The goal is to think about the creative process every week.
I recently reached week 14. Which is longer than I’ve managed any other challenge since becoming ill so I’m hopeful I can continue.
Mobile photography christmas tree angel

Mobile photography

This week’s image is of the angel on top of our Christmas tree.
I took the photo with my iPhone 5 and the iOS camera app in very limited light so that the main light source was the fairy lights.
Next I imported the photo into the Camera+ app.I used the ‘clarify’ filter option first, then the the ‘Contessa’ one from the special effects. I also used this app to crop the photo into a square.

The next app in my workflow was ‘Scratchcam’. There are lots of options to customise the filters provided, from the strength of the effect to how many layers of effects you want applied to your image. I say image not photo because its a good idea not to limit yourself to thinking that photography apps can only be used with photos. I chose a coloured filter that added contrast, a border and a minimal amount of scratches. The ‘Moku Hanga’ app was the third and final one used. This app gives your image an effect similar to Japanese wood block printing. Some of the choices are similar to the ‘Shock-my-pic’ app, but it’s output resolution is better. Tap the various options until you get an effect that pleases you, then fine tune the amount of colour, outline, edge and ‘paper’ used.
